The nation’s top prep schools face the exciting but difficult task of identifying academic promise, personal character, and maturity from a pool of applicant who, as the schools well know, will be far different people four years later. Beyond the grades and test scores, the application essays offer the greatest chance for students to demonstrate their potential — not just as students but as members of the extraordinary communities that prep schools foster.
Prep school essay topics ask students to draw on their experience — in school and in life — in a way that most academic essays never do. They require reflection, questioning, and poise. And they may pose questions that compel applicants to think about their interests, hopes, dreams, and quirks in new ways. This process can be daunting. But it can also be exciting and fruitful.
Our lead essay consultant Josh Stephens brings an insightful, meticulous touch to the essay-writing process. He will help students identify topics, conceive of angles, work through ideas, and, most importantly, tell their genuine story. Josh will challenge students to develop their written voices and to identify those aspects of their character and intellect that will foreshadow the contributions they will make from day one of freshman year.
Beginning with an overview of the student’s academic background, activities, and biography, the prep school guidance package includes five hours of consultation, via email and phone, to work on as many essays as needed. Each essay idea and the drafts that result will receive extensive comments, with the aim of producing compelling, polished drafts. Josh will also offer insight into “mixing and matching” essays and customizing them to respond to different prompts. Parents are of course welcome to participate.
